Playing With Menswear

So, I have to admit. I'm a bit of a Project Runway junkie.. it's pretty awesome. I was watching an old Season 8 one where the designers were split into two teams of 6 and had to make a mini collection. This is the season with Gretchen, Andy, Mondo.. do you guys know what I'm talking about? Oh well if you don't it's okay. It really has no relevance. But anyways I was inspired by the losing teams play on menswear. It was kind blah and bland but it had some good ideas that I wanted to incorporate into my look that night.

Playing with menswear can be super casual and comfortable. You have to make sure the proportions of your clothes are right. No baggy shirt, baggy pant, clunky shoe.. you have to even it out! Here's a casual outfit of a play on menswear. The easiest way to get into it are oversized button downs and oxfords. They scream masculine but with a tight tee and these higher waisted shorts, they whisper feminine.

(Like my little personifications? Yeah. High school English for the win.)

So here they are! Excuse the crappy quality. This is my first time of shooting my own outfits and I had to do it myself with my iPhone.. who ever is reading.. let me know if I should do more!

Getting Older, Getting... Wiser?

Today's my birthday. Hiphip hooray blah blah blah. This isn't necessarily fashion related but I wised up yesterday. I faced a childish fear and now I feel stronger. Whoever is reading out there, just know this. Your fears aren't as scary as they once seemed after you have faced them. It was kind of a stupid fear but a frightening fear nonetheless pour moi. So I leave you with that little inspiring realization of mine. Also, you guys could wear red, white, and blue today. Just go more for patriotically nautical and not patriotically tacky. Happy fourth to anyone in America who is celebrating today.

1940s? Epic.

To put it simply, the 1940s were a time of great fashion. The post-war courage and overall sigh of relief that it ended was greatly reflected upon the fashion of the time. Fabulous draping was everywhere as was even fabulous-er (?) jackets. The time of oxfords and the sophisticated boyfriend look had new shoes, high waisted trousers, and button down shirts. I've been inspired so much by this time period lately because it seems as if my personal style is reflecting it, without me knowing. I was at the library and looked at most likely every fashion in history type book and took out all my favorite outfits and ideas that I wanted to incorporate into my life and style.

First: The Original Oxford

Yes, this shoe did come before a time of "hipsters" and "going against the mainstream of society". Here in a 1940s Sears catalogue (the affordable Barney's back in the day) I saw them for wait for it... $2.85. Maybe I should take a twenty and a time machine and go on a 1940s shopping spree...





























Next: The Most Ladylike Men's Look You'll Ever See

Pants. Trousers. Call 'em whatever you want but they were big. In popularity,  not size. We aren't talking about that boyfriend look. Women looked sleek, professional, and classy in their. The high waist and two pleats on a side look make their legs go on for miles too! (Always a plus as a girl!)


Lastly: How To Incorporate This Without Looking Like You Missed Your Ride Back In Time

It's hard, I know. A true couturess can take a trend and modernize it to make it his or her own. Start small. Maybe some of these pants with a cool t-shirt and tall pumps. Go on, buy some Oxfords and a button down shirts. Let's all channel our inner Christian Dior and rock the streets as a Fourties Fashionista.

The Art of Getting By: Fashion Review

So, this is just something I thought of to start with the fashion in movies and shows I just adore. What better way to start it then this new movie, which is possibly my new favorite?


This edgy, Sundance Film Festival film recently came out. It follows a slacker (Freddie Highmore) falling in love. It's not a movie review so google it if you want to know more. (:


Freddie's character George is a simple dresser. Plaid button down shirt and a t-shirt with jeans pretty much the whole movie. Except his overcoat. Which I immediately fell in love with. This simple coat just makes everything edgy yet classic. Modern yet traditional. I've never been a follower of men's fashion but I do know that if tough guys wear pink... then real men wear these coats.



Now the female lead. Emma Roberts played Sally, a girl who got by pretty well. Her outfits were edgy and modern as well as having some old time Coco Chanelesque pants. Here is one of my favorite outfits. (As well as the last one she wore but I couldn't find a picture!) She pulled off some beautiful oliveish trousers with a navy and white striped tee and some killer oxfords.






All in all, the movie was inspirational. For my life, for my choices, for my fashion sense. The mix of styles was what is expected in a Sundance film. The creativeness through the characters shined through their clothes and I give props to the costume designer for tying this all together nicely.

Je voudrais des prints s'il vous plait.

Okay not totally in French but I didn't know how to say prints! Yes, prints as in the amazingly fashionable look for summer. On the streets, I'm seeing horizontal stripes everywhere. Remember when we were told,
"Never where horizontal stripes. They make you look wide!"
Well, too bad. Because I'm doing it. And loving it.
Classy, nautical, and chic, you can never go wrong with this simple print. 
How to wear it? Easy. Big stripes usually work the best. If you are willing to go a little crazy and mix some patterns, different sized striped always look cool together. Keep it simple with working in the same color palette and you'll be stripetastic!

Sorry, I had to make an adjective with stripe in it. I just had to. (:


And of course, the florals. Oh flowers.. the weather might be too bi-polar for you to grow in but we can wear you just fine. From rompers to dresses to shorts, flowers are taking control. Florals are definitely going to be taking up my wardrobe this summer... if anything else can fit into my closet.. 


And last but not least, I was inspired by the Proenza Schouler spring pre-collection for these next printastic pieces. (I'm just making up words all over the place today...) 
 



 This whole collection is.. well to put it simply, amazing. The prints are thrown in here and there but not in an in your face, look at me, sort of way. They are fashionable, beautiful, and stripey. I'm even starting to like the concept of the horizontal shirt fabric with the vertical stripe shorts. Every single piece is breathtaking.
